Welcome to Part 1 of 8 of my article miniseries How Many Players Drafted Have Made the NHL? In this series I will break down each year’s draft from 2001-2014 by round to see how many players drafted in those drafts have played in the NHL. At least 1 game of NHL experience is required to qualify. I excluded 2015’s results because many of those players are still developing back in juniors. This article is the 1st round only. Each article in this series contains a different round (1,2,3,4,5,6,7) with the exception of Part 8 which will be Round 8 and Beyond which a Round 8 or Beyond does not exist anymore.
About two years ago, I believe it was a Toronto Maple Leafs Fan Website that published an article on How many players make the NHL drafted from each round? However I am either using a smaller or bigger data set because my data on Round 1 was way different from theirs.
Here is an example of how my data will work:
1983 (Year)- 6 (Prospects played in NHL)\ 20 (Drafted) 30% (Played in NHL) (This is not true. I just did a random data for an example)
Let’s start
2014- 16\30 53.33%
2013- 28\30 93.33%
2012- 28\30 93.33%
2011- 28\30 93.33%
2010- 30\30 100%
2009- 29\30 96.66%
2008- 26\30 86.66%
2007- 25\30 83.33%
2006- 27\30 90%
2005- 27\30 90%
2004- 28\30 93.33%
2003- 30\30 100%
2002- 26\30 86.66%
2001- 27\30 90%
Total- 375\420 89.29%
So 89.29% of players drafted in the first round of the NHL Draft from 2001-2014 have at least 1 game of NHL Experience under their belt.
