Until October 13th, every Saturday I will post all of the Panthers news of late into one post which will be in The Panther Prowler.
HUBERDEAU SIGNED
Well Panther fans can finally take a breath, knowing that all of their young core is solidified as Jonathan Huberdeau signed a 6 year $5.9M deal on Tuesday. He is making the exact same money as line mate Sasha Barkov. Huberdeau’s contract starts in 2017-18. After the Bolland trade, negotiations picked up with Allan Walsh. It’s good that we got the deal done know, so we wouldn’t have to worry about Walsh, a man notorious for being really good at getting good money for his clients and known to make a team’s fan base upset, stretching Huberdeau’s negotiations into Arbitration which he was eligible for next year. Here is a list of the Panthers young core and how long they are locked up for:
Ekblad- 9 Years $925K (2016-17) then $7.5M (2017-25)
Huberdeau- 7 Years $3.25M (2016-17) then $5.9M (2017-23)
Barkov- 6 Years $5.9M (2016-22)
Smith- 6 Years $3.425M (2016-17) then $5M (2017-22)
Trocheck- 6 Years $4.75M (2016-22)
Bjugstad- 5 Years $4.1M (2016-21)
Best of all, no complaints about the Huberdeau deal. Huberdeau has 58 goals and 114 assists in 272 career games.
PTOs to Fontaine and Pardy
The Panthers have signed Justin Fontaine and Adam Pardy to PTOs.
Pardy (age 32) is a defenseman. He is not an offensive defenseman and instead focuses on shutting the other team’s defense down. In 338 career games with the Flames, Stars, Sabres, Jets and Oilers he has 4 goals and 48 assists. He played 23 games last year with the Jets and Oilers and had 4 assists. I doubt he gets a spot due to our offensive defense approach however you always need defensive defenseman so I’m unsure.
Fontaine (age 28) is a Right Wing. He went undrafted and has played the last 3 years with the Wild. He had 27 goals and 41 assists in his 197 career NHL games (all with Minnesota). I think he has the better shot to make the roster because I don’t see Kyle Rau or Logan Shaw as good players for the fourth line, so I do think Fontaine should make it.
TV Schedule
Fox Sports Florida, the regional Television home for the Florida Panthers has announced they will broadcast 81 regular season games. The 82nd will be on NBCSN on February 15th at San Jose. Not only that, but they will also broadcast the October 8th preseason game at West Point against New Jersey, live! Hey Fox Sports Florida, instead of showing the rest of the Marlins games (who aren’t making the playoffs) maybe you should broadcast reruns of old Panther games.
World Cup of Hockey
Aaron Ekblad and Vincent Trocheck (North America), as well as Aleksander Barkov and Jussi Jokinen (Finland) started playing in the World Cup of Hockey in Prelim games. Barkov and Jokinen each had a point in Finland’s 3-2 OT win against Sweden on Thursday. Ekblad had a point in North America’s 4-0 Win against Team Europe.
