Welcome to Part 5 of State of the Panthers. We will cover goaltenders.
Roberto Luongo: Lu needs to be limited to 50 games max this year. He had an average postseason. He is the oldest goalie in the league. He had a good year however he seemed to struggle a bit near the end of the season. We need to rest him this year if we are a serious playoff contender for a bit.
Al Montoya: The Big Cubano had a great year backing up Luongo. He is a UFA. Rumors say he isn’t coming back. I’m not sure if he will stay. Rumors say that the Panthers are looking for a younger backup and that Al might find a starting job with some other team. I think we should keep him. He did struggle though in my opinion after being put on the concussion protocol after he was ran into by a Wild player on February 28th.
Mike McKenna: McKenna is the AHL starter. He is old. I don’t see him making the Florida Panthers sadly unless our backup gets injured and he needs to come in like what happened in 2014-15 when Lu and Montoya both went out and Ellis was called up.
Sam Brittan: Brittan I think needs a little more seasoning in the AHL.However he might make the NHL one day.
Sam Montemblaut: Called the future goaltender of the Panthers, Montembeault had a great year in the QMJHL and was the only reason his team went far in the postseason. I think he will get more seasoning in the QMJHL and in a year or two will make the NHL and will start out as a backup.
